The Bed Sitting Room
The name of richard lester’s publish-apocalyptic black comedy, the mattress sitting room, refers no longer to a place but a person. Mainly, lord fortnum (ralph richardson), who fears the nuclear fallout from the shortest struggle in history (which lasted two mins and 28 seconds) is mutating him into the titular rental.
Such is the surreal, eminently british sense of humor that infuses lester’s adaptation of the famous one-act play through spike milligan and john antrobus. Little greater than a string of loosely linked vignettes, the movie capabilities a treasure trove of smart gags, together with a rewrite of “god shop the queen” to honor her majesty’s closest living relative, mrs. Ethel shroake, of 393a excessive avenue, leytonstone. But lester’s eerie visuals, which depict london as little greater than a barren rubbish heap, highlights the important pessimism of milligan and antrobus’s screenplay. Even on this desiccated, pulverized ex-metropolis destroyed with the aid of human stupidity, human beings can’t help but dangle to the unnecessary ordinary absurdities that described their lifestyles before the bomb.
